I recently completed a pair of arm sleeves for Nami—both centred around sakura (cherry blossoms), with a tiger serving as the focal point of the second sleeve.
The first sleeve is dedicated entirely to sakura. Traditionally symbolizing the fleeting nature of life, the blossoms are arranged to follow the natural lines of the arm, creating a balanced and harmonious flow.
Rich reds, yellows, and greens in the petals and leaves bring vibrancy to an otherwise black-and-grey base. These colors add energy and contrast while still preserving a traditional aesthetic. Negative space and soft shading keep the overall composition clean and well-structured.
The second sleeve introduces a more dynamic feel by pairing a detailed, energetic tiger with the softness of cherry blossoms. The tiger—rendered with a sense of movement and strength—acts as the central figure, representing power and protection.
In this design, the sakura provide both visual and thematic balance. As in the first sleeve, bold reds, yellows, and greens appear throughout the blossoms and foliage, giving the piece a vivid, layered look. The color work contrasts with the tiger’s black-and-grey tones, enhancing depth without overwhelming the overall design.
